Two Seattle Bike Lanes Among Top 10 New Bike Lanes of 2014

Free Case Evaluation

Every year, there are hundreds of bicycle deaths on a national level and dozens within the state of Washington. There is bicycle accident insurance available to cyclists, but even better, in 2014 a number of fantastic new bike lanes popped up across the nation. The goal of their construction is to reduce the number of bicyclist accidents.

Some cities that have designed new bike lanes over the course of the year include these.

  • Athens, Georgia
  • Pentagon City, Virginia
  • Tempe, Arizona

While bikes lanes in Chicago, San Francisco, Memphis, and Austin all made the list of the best new bikes lanes for 2014 – as awarded by PeopleforBikes.org – so did two bike lanes right here in the city of Seattle.

2nd Avenue, Seattle

Coming in at number two on the list of best new bike lanes in the country for the year 2014 was Seattle’s very own bike lane on 2nd Avenue. Named as one of the worst bike lanes in the city in 2010, Seattle locals are thrilled with the changes to the path that were proposed – and implemented – by Mayor Ed Murray. The new bike pathway features bike-only signals and is protected from vehicles.

Broadway, Seattle

The second of Seattle’s bike lanes to make the list, at number six out of ten, is the protected bike lane on Broadway. This bike path is protected by large, water-filled plastic loops, parked cars, curbs, and posts. The bike path is two-way, allowing cyclists traveling either direction a place to bike safely. The lane employs plenty of paint to distinguish separate lanes for cyclists and uses signal phasing too. As one of the biggest commercial streets in the city, this bike lane is a blessing for cyclists in Seattle.

Bike Lanes Aren’t Always Enough for Cyclist Safety

While a bike lane is one essential part of keeping a cyclist safe while riding, it’s not always enough. In fact, a cyclist was killed in 2nd Avenue’s previous bike lane just days before the new one opened. When a cyclist accident happens, the cyclist or their family has the right to seek compensation to pay for damages.
