The state of Washington is climbing in the ranks as one of the most pedestrian and bicycle-friendly states in the country. However, it’s not been without some pedestrian fatalities along the way. This custom Google map—created by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and Google using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—details where the most pedestrian fatalities happened in Washington.

Seattle

Just by looking at the map, it’s easy to see that a high percentage of fatal pedestrian accidents from 2010 to 2012 occurred in the bustling city of Seattle. In the data provided by the Seattle Department of Transportation, according to pedestrian accident statistics, there were approximately 500 pedestrian collisions in the year 2010, with nearly 90 percent of them causing injuries.

In 2011, a sharp drop in the number of collisions and injuries involving pedestrians occurred. And that year, there were only two pedestrian fatalities in 2011, a substantial improvement from previous years.

Tacoma

Tacoma and surrounding areas were another part of the state with a high number of pedestrian accidents and fatalities. According to the map, there appear to be three deaths that occurred in the downtown area, with another five occurring in surrounding areas.

Spokane

According to data on the map, there were ten pedestrian fatalities occurring in Spokane over the course of 2010 to 2012. The map shows that there were additional pedestrian accidents in surrounding areas.

Overall in the state of Washington from the years 2010 to 2012, there were 206 fatal pedestrian accidents. Sixty-three, 68, and 75 pedestrian fatalities in the years 2010, 2011, and 2012 respectively.

Other areas of the state that experienced pedestrian fatalities include the area from Kennewick to Yakima, Olympia, and Everett.

Improving Pedestrian Safety in Washington State

Despite it’s high ranking, Washington State still has a long way to go in terms of real pedestrian friendliness. Happily, cities like Seattle are making efforts to improve safety, by adding pedestrian zones and bike lanes. In addition to cities’ efforts, it’s important that pedestrians take precautions when walking, too.

If you are ever hit by a car and suffer injuries, make sure you take legal action. Pedestrians and bicycle accident victims have two years to file a personal injury claim but filing at the time of the crash can increase your chances of successful compensation.
