Takata Airbag Recall

Free Case Evaluation

Airbags are one of the most important parts of a vehicle and are designed to save lives and prevent injuries in the event of a collision. Unfortunately, airbags aren’t always designed and manufactured as they should be. In October 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced an airbag recall involving airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation.

What You Need to Know About the Takata Recall

The most important thing you need to know about the Takata airbag recall is the number and type of vehicles affected by the recall. If you are the driver of an affected vehicle, you need to take action immediately to get the airbags in your vehicle repaired or replaced.

According to the October 22, 2014 press release issued by the NHTSA, there were 7.8 million vehicles affected by the recall, including vehicles manufactured by Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Honda, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru. If you drive any of the models mentioned, you need to check the NHTSA’s website and see if your particular make and model of vehicle is listed in the recall.

Dangers of the Takata Airbags

The recall was issued for very specific reasons: The airbags in question have been linked to tragic events, including the dangerous explosion of the airbags, which has sent pieces of shrapnel flying into drivers' and passengers’ bodies, leading to serious injuries. In some cases, the airbags have caused fatal injuries to drivers and passengers.

According to an article published in Business Insider, one of the causes of the defective airbags could be the improper sealing of airbags manufactured between the years of 2000 and 2007. If inflators were improperly sealed, it might help explain problems during accidents. Another explanation for the defects might be the incorrect use of steel tube during the manufacturing process.

Lawsuits Against Takata Filed

This is not the first time that Takata has been involved in a recall, and there have been several auto-related recalls in 2014, including the many GM recalls. In response to the current recall, those who have been involved in accidents involving defective Takata airbags have begun to file lawsuits against the company, according to media reports.

Those filing the lawsuits claim that Takata violated product liability laws – the laws that require product manufacturers to create products that are reasonably free from harm to the consumer. Such lawsuits may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering related to injuries or death the airbags cause.

If you have sustained an injury caused by a defective Takata airbag, you have the right to file a lawsuit against liable parties, which might include the airbag manufacturer or the automaker. Review the specifics of your case with an attorney to determine whether you have a viable case, which party or parties might be liable, and the types of damages you may recover.
