TAC Campaign Should Serve as Reminder for Seattle Drivers to Drive Safely

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) of Victoria, Australia released an ad campaign to commemorate its 20th anniversary a few years ago. The campaign highlights the dangers of driving while distracted or impaired and its severe and tragic consequences. Showing clips of families, friends, and coworkers enjoying beverages and substances together, and then getting behind the wheel, the ad sends a powerful message that should remind all Seattle drivers to drive safely.

A Powerful Safe Driving Message in the TAC Campaign

The five minute film clip shows what would appear to be normal social behavior: families and friends sharing a drink together, couples sitting at a bar, young people partying at a club, coworkers letting loose over a beer, and more.

However, the film takes a grim turn when those who had too much to drink or took a mind-altering substance get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Set to the song, ‘Everybody Hurts’ by REM, the video clip shows the pain and tragedy of driving while impaired, with images of car accidents, arrests, hospital visits, pedestrian death, and tears of loved ones.

Drunk Driving is a Problem in the United States

In the United States, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-related crashes in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. There were 203 drunk driving fatalities in Washington in 2012, which represents 34 percent of all total traffic deaths in the state. A 2014 article published in Forbes, citing data from the Washington State Patrol, shows that there were 15,401 driving under the influence arrests in Washington State in 2013.

Drinking and Driving Not the Only Danger

Drinking and driving poses a huge risk to both the drunk driver and others on the road, but it’s not the only dangerous thing that a person can do while behind the wheel.

Driving while distracted can also be deadly, and the U.S. Department of Transportation estimated that in the year 2012 alone, there were 3,328 people killed in crashes caused by distracted driving. We recently mentioned a texting and driving ad from Hong Kong that had a similarly powerful message.
